Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
